Rietveld Armchair

A perfect interpretation of Gerrit Rietveld’s “Red Blue Chair” made in solid Burmese teak

This version is over 30 years old with the perfect amount of patina worn into the hardwood.

image

At the birth of Rietveld’s armchair (1916-1918) it was never intended to be painted in the colours that we are now used to seeing it; Red, Blue, Yellow and Black – in fact it was never known as the “Red Blue chair” until 1958 , nor was it painted until 1924 when Rietveld joined forces with the De Stijl movement.

The aesthetics of this particular copy are more closely associated to the original version than if it was in Red and Blue – and therefore favoured by us at 1934.

Delectable!

COX

A recent salvaging trip inspired a pair of tubular-steel-legged coffee tables. The design could also translate itself into dining tables, desk, and everything in between. Please get in touch with any enquiries.

Here are a few things that we brought back from the trip:

Tubular Steel Desk by Cox - restored by 1934 (now SOLD)

A shelving unit probably by COX - currently in the workshop (photos of the finished article coming soon)

MUFF CUSTOMS !

If you’re cool then you’ve obviously already been to Muff Cusotms Cafe - to hang out, eat homemade food, lol over motorbiking stories or just to spend your afternoon sitting amongst Hackney Wick Motorcycling gangs.

Alls I’m doing is highlighting the fact that 1934 supplied the super functional plywood chairs in this place.

GO THERE AND HANG OUT, EAT and HAVE FUN!

PAESAN LONDON - cucina povera

We also supplied PAESAN LONDON with these tubular steel stacking chairs, to match the humble, and perfectly stripped down interior (designed by B3). Everything about the restaurant contributes to the ‘cucina povera’ philosophy that Paesan London represents…

I can’t think of a word better than perfect!

WARTIME ERCOL:

I feel a new obsession arising, and that is with worn-out ebonised-wood!

This pair (which I absolutely love) are stamped ERCOL and CC41.

I’m not going into the debate as to what the CC stands for (obviously it’s Controlled Commodity) - but the stamp puts these chairs between 1941 and 1953.

Straight legs and utilitarian sculpting…
